How to Clean EVA Car Mats

EVA car mats are designed to make everyday maintenance simple. Their waterproof surface can usually be cleaned with a shake, vacuum, wipe or rinse. Follow these steps to remove road grit, mud and wet-weather mess without damaging the mats or your vehicle interior.

What you will need

• A vacuum cleaner or soft brush
• Clean water
• A soft cloth or sponge
• A mild cleaning solution, only where needed

1. Remove the mats from the vehicle

Switch off the vehicle, move the seats if necessary and release any compatible fixing points carefully. Lift each mat out without tipping collected water or debris onto the carpet. Never try to clean a heavily soiled mat while it is still in the footwell.

2. Shake or vacuum loose debris

Shake the mats outside to remove grit, sand and crumbs. Use a vacuum or a soft brush to lift material held within the cellular surface. Removing dry debris first prevents it from turning into mud when water is added.

3. Rinse the surface

Rinse with clean, cool or lukewarm water. Work from one end of the mat to the other so dirt flows away rather than settling back into the cells. A normal hose flow is sufficient for routine cleaning.

4. Use a mild cleaner if needed

For stubborn marks, apply a small amount of mild cleaning solution suitable for vehicle interior materials. Test it on a small area first. Use a soft cloth, sponge or brush and work gently; aggressive scrubbing is rarely necessary.

5. Rinse thoroughly

Remove all cleaner and loosened dirt with fresh water. Check the cell pattern and edges for any remaining residue.

6. Allow the mats to dry

Drain off excess water and let the mats air-dry in a well-ventilated place. Do not refit mats while water is pooled on the surface or trapped underneath.

7. Refit securely

Return each mat to the correct footwell and reconnect the fixing points provided for that vehicle and product configuration. Make sure the driver’s mat lies flat and cannot interfere with any pedal. Fixing types and positions vary between vehicles, so do not force a fixing that does not align.

What to avoid

• Harsh solvents, bleach or unverified chemical cleaners
• A pressure washer held close to the mat surface or edging
• Wire brushes or other abrasive tools
• Direct high heat from a radiator, heat gun or tumble dryer
• Refitting a mat over wet or dirty vehicle carpet

Quick maintenance between deeper cleans

Shake out loose grit regularly and wipe small marks before they build up. During muddy or winter driving, check the mats more frequently for standing water, grit and road salt. A brief clean carried out often is usually easier than waiting for heavy contamination.
